You should not be forced as a newcomer to spend several hundreds of bucks to catch every pokemon yourself. And lets be real, for us it wasn't even our own hundreds of bucks back in the day. Nowadays, if we got into pokemon rn, would we really unquestioningly throw that much of our own hard earned cash at it?
