Needed like a medicine and getting it from the village opposite the desert then coming back through the desert to give to the guy whose daughter or something is sick. And as a reward you get the item that allows you to Rock Climb.
That way it isn't some pointless side quest and gives you a reward by trekking across the desert. It could also work that a guy gives you a medicine to take across the desert to the other village and receive the item there. That way you don't need to take two trips through the desert.
