Field effects take the generally braindead battle system and throws something with a bit more spice in there to encourage extra strategy in battles. Speaking of, the bosses are fun as fuck barring a couple (Kiki and Shelly come to mind) and it's far more satisfying knowing you beat a boss that has a clear advantage over you from the very start.
And honestly the exploration is really good too. I genuinely like having to work to find certain Pokemon or certain items, and the puzzles are pretty fuckin' neato too. Obviously the main complaint is the dogshit story, which is sorta the cherry on top for me because edgy fangame stories are peak comedy to me.
