I enjoyed May's character, but it wasn't realistic enough.
Here we have a beginner trainer who dislikes Pokemon, but is unsure as to what she wants to do exactly. Cue the first contest episode, and she wants to follow that dream.
Flash forward to her first contest, where she naturally loses, as she's a beginner, thus prompting her to train harder. After that, it just followed a pattern of "lose one, win one", with no more development besides Drew slowly sweeping her off her feet.
Dawn however, starts off as this optimistic yet egotistical beginner coordinator. She thinks contests will be a breeze for her because her mom is a champion.
Naturally, like May, she lost her first contest. She trained, then won her second after beating that fag Kenny. We think "oh look, more May."
Instead, she loses two contests in a row, prompting her to question her path entirely for a good few episodes.
I like both characters, but I feel Dawn was written better. Probably because she was also meant to be Ash with a vagina.
