Older generations can be Mega-retconned like Hoenn was, and they can update it to 3D while introducing Megas on pokemon occurring in those games.

I absolutely don't want this to happen, but it'd be a very easy way for (the very lazy) Gamefreak to make effort-free remakes while adding enough little new material to force people to keep buying new games.
