The female trainer is a childhood friend.
The male trainer has always been a jerky "cool" kid who hangs out with other jerk kids (the pokemon equivalent of a jock) and tries to hit on your female friend.
As the story progresses, the male rival will side with the villainous team trying to prove how tough and macho he is by trying to get involved with the tough villainous team. He has to turn on his jerky childhood friends to prove his loyalty to the team. He eventually moves up the ranks and the team leader uses him to thwart you. The male rival gets in way over his head and before he knows it, he is pressured and intimidated into the role against his better judgement. Ultimately, the team leader is full of false promises and the MC must save this rival and redeem him as he learns the error of his ways.
The female trainer starts to fall for the jerk male trainer's lies and posturing before the MC and her realize his true character. She aspires to be a great pokemon breeder and will offer tips and tools on how to breed better mons. Along the story, she'll often team up with you for double battles.
