Believe it or not, making everyone have a normal build with absolutely no discernible features doesn't exactly make for interesting character design.
Aqua's and Magma's redesigns in ORAS were done to not only give them some semblance of individuality and personality through design other than "we bad guy", but it also created a struggle between intellect (Magma) vs. force (Aqua).
For Tabitha specifically, they've combined the "overweight geek" and "smart but conceited" archetypes to create a coherent design that fits the theme of the team.
Does his redesign really piss you off that much? Do people really still think subjectively where "fat" instantly equals bad character design, or does he just remind you of yourself? Obese, angry, and an undeserved sense of self-importance?
