To it's great credit, the third Pokemon movie is far more comprehensible than most to someone without prior knowledge, since a non-fan could piece together a lonely girl's coming into too much power and roping in the heroes by snatching someone dear to them. But taken in a vacuum, the existing characters don't change for the experience and the movie does not have to go out of its way to endear you to them, because it can presume you already are. That is an entire section of storytelling that these movies get to skip.
