Effie sent out Doris as her starter- she knew her Lotad could deal with the gym better than anyone else, and had faith in her friend. Meanwhile, Roxanne sent out one of her Geodude.
The fight seemed like a cinch, but Doris was immediately caught off-guard by a Rock Throw and was already down to half her fighting potential. After a quick run back to Effie to heal, the Lotad charged back into battle and triumphantly took out her opponent with a mere Absorb.
The first Geodude was succeeded by a second, which met a similar fate! And then Roxanne's ace came out. Nosepass...
Immediately upon entering, Roxanne's ace used Block, preventing Doris from doing any switching out. That prompted the lilypad Pokémon to reassess her strategy, and she soon began growling at the enemy to catch it off guard.
To which the enemy simply Hardened.
...rinse and repeat for four turns...
...until, finally, Doris just charged in and Absorbed once more, easily taking out Roxanne's Nosepass...
...and doing so on two feet instead of six!!
As the now-Lombre brought Effie her badge, the two celebrated with a hug and a cheer, the student more than proud to have overcome her former teacher and proven herself worthy of going on this journey...
