Them being pets is exactly what made pokemon different from all the other monster shows.
Every other show about monsters tried to do what you are saying, giving the monster personalities, and most of them sucked because of that.
Is not that I dont understand what you mean. You think "man I want them to talk and be friendly" but then when you watched things like monster rancher you couldn't think anything but "JUST SHUT UP!"
Pokemon are fine the way they are. Even when one of them talk in one of the movie they always suck. Like volcanion for example
