One of the biggest reasons I hated yugioh is because I always saw it as a try hard edgy series with dumb over designed monsters. I hated over designed creatures then and I hate it now. Now I liked digimon but digimon was coe existing with pokemon. It didn't start becoming a new fad like yugioh did. Also at least digimon still kept a sort of cartoonish look for its monster designs. Don't know about now though. If I wanted realistic designed creatures I would just play Final Fantasy or Magic. Yugioh was one of the most try hard things I ever witnessed in my life. I am so glad it at least didn't have the longevity to stay relevant.
Pic related sums up many of the new gen monsters perfectly. Even if simple designs weren't the plan doesn't mean they shouldn't have went with it. Sometimes accidents is what makes something great. Although your wrong and at first pokemon were suppose to be more simple. Since they were for 2 and a half gens. Gen3 started the overdesign and it only grew from there.
