I feel like I'm missing something because people always say Gen 3 has the best set of starters but I don't really see how. The base forms are all decent but they go to shit almost immediately after evolving and the final forms are somehow even worse. Sceptile is a bland lizard with a beer gut, Blaziken is a furbait fighter chicken and Swampert is an ugly fish monster. There's literally no appeal to any of them, yet they always seem to come out as the most popular starter trio. Gen 4 did the "cartoon animals with a twist" better IMO, and Gen 1 and 2 both have perfect starter trios, being mainly just animal + element sometimes with a small twist to make the design more interesting without giving it a set personality.
