if they dont I think they might create something close to the blizzard hatebase which used to be hardcore fans.
the company had over a decade of good will built up and over just a few years they lost nearly all of it.
sword and shield might have a way bigger negative impact on the reception of the franchise than they originally thought. now people will actually ask more questions and analyze what they get. that wasnt really a thing in the past. at most people just ignored pokemon and dropped out of the fanbase if they got bored with it.
this is 100% on gamefreak though and its up to them to prove people wrong with their next title.
