While all the legendary birds are relatively solitary in nature, perhaps the most solitary of them is Moltres. Unlike Zapdos, Moltres avoids human civilization, instead opting to nest in rocky crags, caves, and volcanic areas far away from commonly travelled foot trails. Irritable but not homicidal, they will "guide" lost travelers out of their mountain territory - not out of altruism like Articuno, but mostly because they find them annoying and want them to leave.
Moltres take on large prey such as Fearow or Rapidash, and are typically the apex predators of wherever they nest. However, there is one recorded case of a Moltres fiercely battling a wild Tyranitar within the caverns of Mt. Silver and being forced to retreat outside - the video of this battle has accrued over sixteen million views on YouTube.
Moltres mate about every five years, gathering at the closest volcanic caldera. Unlike Articuno, the males choose to fight each other for their mates in a single-elimination tournament, with the winner getting any female he desires, the second-place getting anyone besides the winner's mate for that year, and so on and so forth. Dominant males appear to mostly favor the largest females, although some will choose to mate with a smaller Moltres that one of their defeated opponents had their eye on out of spite.
Once the Moltres have selected their mates, all of them will breed and fly back to their individual territories - with the exception of the "alpha female," who will claim the volcano as her own and chase her mate away. The females will then lay their eggs - about four to seven per clutch - and raise the hatchlings until they are able to fly, at which point she will force them out of her territory.
