His design and dex entries (he has bandage-shaped markings and “doesn’t know his own strength”) seem more like Fighting type. Donphan rolls around on the surface, but he’s never shown using his trunk to excavate into the earth or to drench himself in mud. He’s got no real elemental connection to anything earth related as far as I can tell, but he’s closer to Ground typing than Phanpy is, at least.
