The team working at Smash had Multiple choices in terms of who could rep Gen VI. Greninja is the one they liked the most, and therefore they added him to the game. It wasn't some MUH GF POPULARITY BOOGEYMAN conspiracy. And in terms of anime and merchandise, you're full of it too. Greninja has gotten a whopping 1 appearance in animated form in a movie that has only premiered in Japan as of now. And he starred ALONGSIDE the other starters, each of them with the same spotlight time. In that case i'd say Delphox is getting pandered to in the anime, considering the fact that it's the only one (so far) to appear in the main series. Merchandise-wise he's gotten the same amount as the other starters and you know it. If anything, the only edge it'll have over the others is that it'll get an amiibo first because Smash characters have priority.
