So many of their games, anime, and media talk about Pokemon caring greatly about the bond they share with their trainers as the core of their strength and one of the big reasons trainers like Ash and the Video Game Protags are winning so much. So why not have the mascot (Or starters in this case) be a Pokemon that evolves via Friendship and Bonds? Like Riolu, Buneary, or even Pichu.
