Plus, the half-yokai born with special powers is a pretty common stock character in Japanese media. The most famous example, the famous onmyouji Abe no Seimei (whose mother was a shapeshifting fox), is said to have been able to command weaker oni even as a small child, which sounds to me a bit like being able to talk to pokemon.
