Since you never played Sun and Moon you have the perfect opportunity to play Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as your first games. They are the superior version but if you already played S/M then youll feel like you've wasted you money
Totem pokemon are a nice alternative to gyms. and it even solves the problem of the gym leaders having so few pokemon. You start a totem trial with a little puzzle while battling pokemon along the way just like a typical gym and the totem pokemon itself has an ally that it will repeatedly call upon after you knock it out. So if you thought gym leaders were too easy in Gen 6 because most only had 2 pokemon this game solves that problem. Until you kill the totem pokemon it will continue to call upon allies for help.
