Although even assuming that's true, it really sowed the seed of things to come: braindead easy games, cut content all around, strong features with expiration dates, no postgame... it would ony get worse from game to game but it did clearly start there.
Although it also is the one game that bothered creating, updating and standardizing models, textures and animations for all 721 pokemon, which was a commendable effort that was later dragged through the mud for the sake of cheapness and greed.
I'd say XY were the last wholly "fine" games. ORAS was a catastrophe of a remake, SM had a couple things that it did great while the rest was kind of shitty and let's not get into the lucrative disaster that is everything on Switch.
