I prefer GSC personally, but it's always good to know that Johto has a perfect streak of top notch games until ILCA releases Rainbow Gold & Storm Silver that is.
And yes, I like GSC for the same reasons you like HGSS. It is also my favourite game to replay, and honestly the only games I can even find the motivation to replay and actually enjoy my time with it.
Here are my reasons for why GSC are the best games to replay:
>No story bullshit
>No forced legendary encounter
>Little dialogue and handholding
>Split path at Ecruteak really opens up the region and allows you to play the game your way
>Huge selection of Pokémon to choose from in the main campaign
>Absolutely amazing OST that never gets boring
>Gorgeous spritework, best in the franchise IMO
>Huge postgame, especially for a GBC game
>Instead of using story and dialogue to pad out the game time, the game slowly trickles you extra side content during the main campaign, adding a shit ton of repeatable gameplay
>Has the only Dexes that matter (Kanto & Johto)
>Loads of side areas
All in all, Johto is just great for replays, but it also feels special and memorable.
