By then he was already in Smash, which makes it even more irrelevant. Kukui's only appeared in a handful of episodes halfway through the series. Saying that made him relevant is like saying Delphox was more important than Greninja for the franchise because it appeared in the Movie and Debuted in the anime over a year before Greninja did.
