The Anime and the Manga over the years really could've taken a page out of each and enhancing the nuancy of the trainers and their Pokemon, with the Manga swapping out a big part of the team for growth and development reasons as opposed to the Anime's filler formula of shuffling up the season's group and their Pokemon for comedic purposes
Liko and Roy are one example of benefitting from it with the former's desire to understand the emotions of the Pokemon, which goes beyond her own Team and the ones she encounters outside of the blimp whereas Roy could grow from working with different get-ups altogether. Both Liko and Roy would get solid training in while expanding on the relationship between the two characters and their Pokemon, similar to Red and Blue in the RGB chapter where the trainer rubbed off on the opposite team while adding a layer of understanding of how both parties work.
