The gimmick here would be like Flannery in ORAS, a new gym leader/E4 member thats taking over an old spot, in this case a knock-off Zen master. So when the player runs into them during the game, they're spouting dumb proverbs and koans that make no sense: "The sky watches the ground and sighs", "To open a door requires both eyes open", "A wooden table needs no plates", stuff like that
The fight gimmick is centered around helping others, which what he's trying to get across (badly) to the player. Xatu boosts with Calm Mind or Cosmic Power and Baton Passes it to Kadabra/Alakazam, or sets up Tailwind, Solrock Baton Passes a Rock Polish boost to Medicham, etc etc. Its not too hard to disrupt but can potentially snowball, especially in the E4 fight if MegaCham gets a boost or two.
