This was only ever done in response to the narrative that XY was some drop-off in quality, or the worst thing ever to happen to the series. Making comparisons to older games is only natural, because in the first place its being held to their standard. Its not throwing old games under the bus to point out where they fell short, or to point out where XY and other recent games actually improved.
This is also merely an evolution of the Genwunner debacle. Only now the Genwunners are people who grew up in the "Golden Era", and nu Pokemon players are now on the defensive instead.
