Years later my brother was playing Ruby on emulator and found a shiny Numel. Then I would have to wait for a few years again to find a shiny Golbat on my Soul Silver during a "cave explorer" surge.
Besides those legit shinies, I had a Shiny Pachirisu caught with the radar method, but don't really think it counts. I never reseted for shinies because it doesn't give the same feeling as finding one unexpectedly.
OP, I believe besides the Radar Method in DPPT, the Masuda Method of breeding and the Shiny trinket thing in B/W/W2/B2 there are no real hints to find shinies. I believe it happens eventually when you less expect it.
