Ash using the same set of six that he used before is a very Ash move; he's winning with the team that got him there, and he wants to prove that they're capable after they lost the last time. Paul thinks with strategy above all else, so planning for how to be Ash specifically required a different team. Of course, he still lost, but his decisions were fairly characteristic of Paul.
