I just bought Sword four days ago. I didn't spend actual money on it, I had a bunch of credits from trading old games in so I just used that to get it for free.
I'm 13 hours in and heading to the second gym, and so far it's been much better than I thought it would have been.
I've been having more fun with it so far than I had with X, Omega Ruby, Sun, and Let's Go Pikachu. I quit all of those multiple times and had to restart out of boredom before even making to the second gym.
The wild area is actually a really nice addition and I had a blast running around it catching pokemon and doing raids for 4 hours straight. It could all be better, but this is a step in the right direction. What I really have been desiring while playing it has been more freedom. I look at everything in the background and I want to go there, but a fence blocks my path. I want the ability to jump the fence and explore this region without any handrails to keep me on the beaten path. I just can't stop imagining Breath of the Wild and crawling up trees and cliffs, swimming through rivers, and surfing down mountains. If the next generation of pokemon offered that amount of freedom of exploration then it would be the largest leap in progress that these games have ever experienced.
I want to climb trees to catch whatever flying or bug type pokemon are living in them; lift rocks to see what's hiding underneath; look at tracks embedded in mud to hunt down pokemon; scale cliffs to fight dragon types, that kinda shit would be awesome.
I guess that's why I like the wild area because it's very freeing, as it's a little frustrating to not be able to step over a knee-high ledge when walking through the normal routes.
Anyway, this might end up being the best pokemon game I've played since gen V.
