Pokemon can have much more difficult readings since a lot of them require certain cultural knowledge (like Jynx who is based on a mountain hag yokai, for example), but that ties into the core concept of a child going for an adventure and learning about the world which ties to the trading mechanic; the player goes out into the world and through encountering fellow 'trainers' can learn from their perspectives on designs. Of course, it doesn't really work in practice when some lard stain at bulbapedo writes about Jynx being a ganguro girl and everyone starts blabbing like it's true or some dork keeps saying Squirtle is a squirrel. There are always going to be holes in your audience, no matter what. A great example; Incineroar is a heel based on Black Tiger, but people say it's Tiger Mask when it clearly is not. You've two sides, one that gets it and enjoys the heelishness and the other side who think they get it and carry on not reading things properly.
