That's not true in the slightest. Pic related on the PS1 is one of my favorite JRPGs and it's a 100+ hour, story heavy, linear game. And yet it's not nearly as annoying as SM because the devs actually knew how to properly pace gameplay and story without either aspect taking away from the other.

Something tells me people who defend how story and characters are handled in the last few gens haven't played any actual RPGs outside of Pokemon. Pic related is a 100+ hour JRPG but the story and characters didn't feel intrusive because the devs knew how to decently pace things.
Meanwhile you have many older RPGs like DQ, SMT and even early Pokemon that didn't rely on story as a crutch to keep the player engaged, or to pad out the game.
Gens 7 and 8 Pokemon are perfect examples of how story and characters shouldn't be handled

People who say this shit never know what the fuck they're talking about. Toriyama's art was never as angular or sharp looking as Sugimori's old style, character proportions are widely different, Toriyama's style is typically much more detailed, and you can hardly call the coloring and shading similar. Clearly the influence is there but you're fucking retarded to call it straight up aping his style
