Why don't they make it so in postgame you can take over a gym and it's sort of like a battle facility you can have some battles in every day.
The battles get progressively harder and you have to keep people from winning your badge to chain points for some highscore board you can compare with your friends online.
You could also decorate your gym pretty freely and recruit a couple trainers (maybe just their sprites, not their pokemon) as you choose.
