Maybe, there should be some word to describe the body structure that canines, hyenas, and thylacines all arrived at independently, but I don't think we should just call them all "canines" or something derived from that word. For some reason, I don't feel like dogs should get all that credit for a body structure that probably predates them. The word "insectoid" doesn't have this problem (I think), and it does show that we can separate body structure from species.
