I figure it is a Rock-type of some kind. Initially viewed as a pest by the aristocrats of Kalos, Purrloin's attraction to shiny objects was seen as a sign of taste. And if you had the best looking Purrloin you obviously had a lot of wealth and status. Eventually Purrloin started to grow gems on themselves - gaining the rock type.
