The fact remains is that when XY was premiering, people FELT Ash was more competent, trained more, people FELT his growth from a fresh team to a champion level trainer, the show MADE us believe that. There was very little complaints about that because they successfully painted the image of a competent Ash we could believe would win in the end. Journeys does not. No one is convinced that this current team should be at this level, we just accept it. People complaining about the lack of training miss the point. Featuring more scenes where Ash and Riolu are practicing form palm wouldn't fix the fundamental issue that the structure of the show, the quality of the battles, and the episodes we've gotten have not effectively painted the picture of an Ash Ketchum who's at the top of his game. He's been depicted as a kid having fun with a team he likes. That's great and all, but when we're looking at the climax of 25 year old anime, this was not the time to go this route.
