Mamedanuki is used to refer to a small tanuki. The mame part of it come from 豆 (mame) which literally means "bean." However, bean is often used to refer to something small in Japanese.
For example, Ed in Fullmetal Alchemist always would get mad when people called him a beansprout because they were making fun of him for being small.
