I've seen a lot of authors vehemently defend their subpar writing skills by hiding under the facade that it's their "style" to write like that. Another reason, I believe, is that a lot of authors just simply regard their work a little too much, and refuse to listen to good criticism on the basics of writing.
Of course, receiving reviews like "man I hate that villain!" or "The main characters are so sad! :(" is always good. but that's not what I meant.
