I'm from Homewood, a south suburb of Chicago, and my town is right next to one of the biggest rock quarries in the United States. There are TONS of fossils down there and lots of other wierd rare rocks and minerals.
On top of that, we live next to a really wooded golf course so we're surrounded by trees and wildlife. Squirrels, rabbits, all different types of birds and even coyotes are pretty common. I grew up middle-class/upper middle class (we weren't rich but we've never been hurting for money).
With all that in mind, I'm certain that I would've ended up with one of the fossil Pokemon (probably an Omantye since most of the fossils in Thornton Quarry are of sea creatures) or something like Pachirisu as my starter.
