>>47276204It's also a way to fake subsurface scattering. In real life tree branches aren't opaque sheets that block all the light that hits them. Leaves are translucent. Even pine needles are to some extent. And light shines through the gaps between the leaves, bouncing off the branches and the ground, so that the underside is partially lit.
It's sounds like a petty issue, but so much of this game's visuals are gonna revolve around foliage, it's pretty easily fixable, and it's too obviously ugly to be an intentional style choice.
