The first games as a kid were fine to spam damage moves without any sort of concern for status moves or buff/debuffs
This stands to this day, because the series is for kids
Especially for the main campaign
Inasmuch, actually caring about strategy, stats, IV/EV, traits, egg moves, natures, etc. brings more depth to the series as an adult when you actually start to care about the inner workings of the game
Being a kid is rolling through the game with whatever move hits the hardest and beating the Elite Four
Being an adult is actually making strategy to conquer the Battle Frontier and such
The Battle Frontier in Emerald seems stupid as a kid because you get no experience or pokedollars, but it's the best part of the game as an adult because you actually get challenge for a change
