Thief/Covet more so for swiping shards to trade for evolution stones.
But the real magic of Pickup (for me) was getting the rare berries quick and easy in LG/FR and trading them over to RSE for making Poke'blocks. No waiting around for days and diligently watering your berry plants to get a single net berry and it's a workaround for physical cartridges with a dead internal battery.
