I prefer the lankiness, because it makes the werewolf look hungry, and I'd say a hungry werewolf is even scarier than a muscular one. Not to mention it also makes it look more unnatural, an important theme to hit upon in horror stories. The muscular versions, the only thing unnatural is that they stand upright, otherwise pretty much looking like a wolf. I prefer the emaciated diseased look.
Now, for the evolutions design... I agree it could have been done better, mainly the goofy cartoonish grin and perhaps the eyes. The red color addition and the "remains" of Rockruff on his back give the impression of a Hemlock Grove style transformation, which is cool
