Either the marketers and producers of the show feel that Ash/Pikachu are too marketable and wont let him be written out of the series or the writers legitmately believe in the positive theme of never giving up and always trying to a fault. When Ash loses over the seasons he takes it better each time. He was crying like a bitch the the first few, but he took this loss with a smile. Perhaps the writers want to show the players of pokemon that when they battle their friends, it never pays off to be a salty cunt when you lose because you WILL LOSE.
Or it could simply be that the people with the real money funding the series just want to keep ash and pikachu because a new protag isnt as marketable. Either way, dont blame the writers. This implies that the people writing/animating the anime have complete creative freedom to change the main character of a show that's been running for almost TWO DECADES.
