Ideals are defined as "standards of perfection," "models to imitate," "paragons," etc. None of those definitions are necessary, only in the watered down sense of a basic "goal" does the notion of ideals really matter. In order to use the truth in any way, you would typically need a goal of some sort in order to avoid just aimlessly doing things. Even in the sense of ultimate/supreme goal, ideals are not really necessary. You don't need to have the ideal of a perfect world to be driven to do occasional good deeds, or have the drive to do anything--no need of the ideal painting to paint, etc. You just need to know the facts of how to make something better and want to do it. 'Course, you can be real flimsy with your definition of ideals in order to make it absolutely necessary if you stretch it to mean "ambition," "inspiration," "desire," etc.
