And let's not forget Ash is basically a Champion so he can't be beaten by a shitter who just started. At this point, the best they can do is introduce a rival who is more or less competent from the get-go like Gladion and build him up from the first episode as they did with Paul. I don't know maybe someone like Bea and say she won one or two Pokemon Leagues in the past
