Honestly, something akin to DQXI's Draconian system would be great. Just give the player a bunch of toggles at the start that they can turn off if the game is too hard. Off the top of my head, you could do: stronger pokemon (better stats, moves, etc), better trainers (better a.i., team composition), less experience gained, no experience from low-level pokemon, less money from battles, items cost more, nuzlocke mode, pay for pokemon centers, and maybe even a reduced selection in shops setting. This way people could customize their difficulty and the argument of the game being too hard for the kiddies doesn't hold water since it's all optional and reversible.
