>>4533The first few gens were a lot more animalistic in general, or at least heavily leaned that way aside from the objectmons and the like. (See ghost types, magnamite and such.) Considering the inspiration that made Pokemon possible in the first place with stuff like bug collection and what not, this isn't too surprising. Though as Pokemon went on, it seems to have broaden its influences and became more... Well, not generic, but more mass marketable in ease of manufacture and braod appeal. The animal ecology thing is more or less dead at this point in time, atnd mons going on from gen 6 onward are more stylized in a certain way. I am sure that the shift to 3D has played at least a partial role in this, as well as change of designers as well on top of that to accentuate a shift away from the old and into this newer, rounder, softer style. (With some exceptions.)
Honestly, one of my pet peeves with the newer generations is the aesthetic inconsistency. They just clash with the old designs, since they were created with a different aesthetic style and focus in mind. What would solve this would be a complete hard reboot so that all the older designs are remade to fit with the newer ones. I wouldn't like it as much, seeing as I am partial to the oldies. But at least it would be self consistent. Something like pic related. With the exception of totodile, the other two seem to exhibit at least a few elements that are in common with the later gen starters. I would presume it would be something similar to that if a hard reboot were to ever happen.
