Digimon designs are expressive and lively while with Pokemon, vast majorities of them are just throwaway cartoon animals, or just downright bad. Like, you have stuff like Swellow or Wattrel or Surskit that are literally just dex fillers to say "we have a Pokemon of x animal. If I was a kid growing up in the Pokemon world and somebody gave me an Intelleon or a Quaquaval to be my best friend and adventuring buddy I would literally just release it stay home.
And the evolution system complaint has always been one of the weirdest things Pokemon fans get hung up on. "There are no rigid rules other than that evolutions are generally thematic." I don't get how it's not liberating to have the idea that you can have creative and varied evolution lines that go in different directions instead of singular rigid lines. In Digimon you could have your Sobble or Quaxly turn into something that isn't an abomination.
