In The Teal Mask, Kieran fails to confront them at all, while in Mochi Mayhem, he fends off the townsfolk while you fight Pechy, and you're not even given the option to try and let him catch it instead of you (though, that might just be Indigo Disc development).
In another way, poison has always been the ninja type since gen 1. Kieran's obsessed with proving his martial might, in turn makes it harder for him to deal with subterfuge.
