The Seaglass dev themselves even simplified the battle backgrounds at one point, but then walked it back.
Personally I like how unique it looks, but I haven't played through Seaglass myself to get a full picture.
I kinda like HGSS map too, I think it's cute and pretty sure Polished uses it too. That's all just imo ofc, I'm not too picky usually.

Seaglass dropped just midway into 2024, I can't imagine this has been in the works much longer than that, if even.
To be fair though the graphic DID says the designs are subject to change, and when I checked the thread on the romhacking sub earlier one of the first comment I saw pointed out the linearity just as you did. Picrel is what Nemo22 had to say about it.
