I bought a 3DSXL for the express purpose of playing my decade-long fantasy. Yes, I did go to Gamestop's midnight release and, yes, I did get both versions. Starting the game at 11:45 PM the day before the official release was one of the greatest moments of my life, especially when it started off with a nearly IDENTICAL intro to the original, spritework and all.
